The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) By 1970 the Brown pelican was declared Endangered through the Endangered Species Act (ESA) due to over hunting and DDT and other pesticides. DDT was banned in 1972 and with nesting habitat protection, the pelican was removed from the endangered list in 2009 and populations continue to increase. The Brown pelican is a shining example of the success in conservation and habitat preservation.
Habitat: Coastal marine habitats. Brown Pelicans can occasionally be seen at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
