"Conservation"
The Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) is the largest waterfowl species in North America, and was nearly extinct in the early 20th century due to over poaching for their feathers. In 1935 conservation began with protected land where a small population was found. In the early 1970’s populations dropped again and supplemental feeding brought their numbers back up and are now listed as ‘Least Concern.’
Habitat: Lakes, ponds, and large rivers in wintertime. In the most recent years sightings have been at the Patuxent Research Refuge.
